A sister brand of the iconic Red Eye Smokehouse, REX is a kitchen bar where cocktails take center stage, with the food menu being an eclectic mix of small plates.
Tucked away in the buzzy enclave of Jalan Besar, the team behind Red Eye Smokehouse has created an intimate space in 2022 — a laid-back, neighbourhood cocktail bar that is also a collaborative space, opening its doors to diverse partners to bring fresh experiences through exciting experimentations and collaborations.

As a start to the project, we worked closely with REX’s founders and team to understand their vision, overall concept, and intended target audience for the brand.
With REX’s close relations to Red Eye Smokehouse, we studied the origins of smokehouses and the history of smoking food. True to how REX intends to be as a brand, our research informs us of the past when cavemen and people smoked their meat, where it was a way for people to gather and be present in a communal space.
After much in-depth discussions with the founders, REX’s brand and identity were formed based on three keywords: Experience, Experiment and Cross-collaboration. The brand’s name, REX (Red Eye + X), was also conceived based on these three key values.
With a strong and clear understanding of who the brand is and what it stands for, we wanted to create an identity and accompanying collaterals that will truly embody and reflect the characteristics of REX.
Modern with a fun twist, the logo draws inspiration from the three key values keywords. The play on the top-right corner of the “X” can be interpreted in two ways:
On its own, the “X” stands out as the brand icon. To emphasise its meaning and significance, we differentiated the X from the rest of the word by colour. Ensuring that the logo remains adaptable to the brand’s special occasions or collaborations, a colour change of the logos’ letters would represent it accordingly.
Prior to deciding on REX’s colour palette and typography, we deep dived into researching the brand’s target audience. Eventually, we decided on a modern mix of colours and typefaces that complement one another.
Continuing our work for REX, we designed posters for their launch party.
To create a welcoming and vibrant e-invitation to the launch party, we explored a Bauhaus style that is representative of the brand. Bearing in mind that this is the first touch REX would have with its clients, the invitation was designed specially to embody REX’s message and intentions behind what the brand offers — simple, fuss-free, and good food.

We also designed the menu to showcase REX’s offerings – in a unique, stackable style, maintaining REX’s brand colours as part of the paper selection. Various paper textures were explored, and we carefully sized the layers of the menu to distinguish between categories, which will make for ease of ordering.
